Crawford Symphony X in Bb Major "Excelsior"
For Full Orchestra
A symphony meaning to represent happiness however represents the opposite.
Description
This Symphony is full of complete irony due to the purpose of the piece and the outcome. Crawford wanted this piece to be the happiest piece he wrote and he thought it wasn’t going to be hard for him. It turns out making happy music wasn’t the easiest for a depressed man. It took him 2 years to even make the first version since he was never in a good enough mood to write more than 10 measures in a month. Despite this symphony supposedly being Crawford's happiest work, it turned out to have one of his saddest background stories to his music ever.
This piece has Incredible Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, Horn, Violin, Viola, Timpani, Low Strings, Bassoon, Bass Trombone, and Tuba excerpts.
Fun Fact: He handwrote the first 2 movements and the manuscript book is saved for a placement in a museum after he passes
